NCT works on connections

Facebook, twitter, blogs… initially set up to allow simple connections between people, now has become the trending tools used for marketing. We are now learning these tools, practically known as New Communication Techonologies (NCT), to understand the way it works for big companies, and make it work on ourselves.

For big companies, it is to sell their products and brand name.
For us, it is to sell ourselves – in terms of our talent, skills, ability etc.

If you don’t tell people how good you/ your products are, no one will know. Whether you are overselling yourself/ it, testimonials by other people will tell.
And to do that in the most cost effective way now is to make use of the NCT, because everything is about budget, every dollar and every cent is clearly recorded on the company’s account book. Putting it nicely, it is because they want to stretch every dollar spent, and they tell you that is to work within constraint, but you know that it is because thy want to do a lot of things with little money.

Well, who doesn’t? It is that pragmatic. We are all living in a realistic world.

Getting things done through connections isn’t something to be ashame of. Who doesn’t use connections?
Everyone says: “I don’t want to use connections to get a job.”
People may compliment your performance on a job, in school etc. with other people, and that more or less influence the impression your potential employers have of you.
It is an uncontrolled communication.
How would you know you didn’t get the job because of connections?

And NCT is just about that, connections.

Through the connections within your network, spread the word about someone, about something, it will have a ripple effect. May not have all the response, but at least you know the reach. And the first objective is achieved – awareness.

That, is what I understand of NCT now.

WSJ Passes USA Today; HuffPo Passes WashPo

Ok, the WSJ has overtaken USA today to become the #1 newspaper in the US by weekday circulation.

But the bigger news for me is that the Huffington Post passed Washingtonpost.com in unique visitors in September 2009.

Marketingvox called it a “seismic shift in the media landscape”. I agree.

Increasingly companies are looking to hire people with social media skills.

“As employers have moved to crack down on staff using office time to post photos to Flickr or tweet ruminations about their misadventures, the savviest companies have instead mobilized their cyber social butterflies as a key part of business strategy. And those organizations currently lacking such people have posted help wanted ads for social media experts.”
